about

Acid Mali 2000 is a stripped down sound concentrating on Dan Harper's young love of acid music. The tracks were made in Mali, in the desert town of Sevare, near Mopti in 2000. Dan was an aid worker posted out there. He had just left living in Brixton and Brighton and sold his first sampler and limited studio gear to turn mobile. Slightly ahead of the game the laptop and Egosystems Wami Box Sampler/Soundcard never worked properly and were withdrawn from the market. Armed with this Dan wrestled with its many limitations and using solar panels produced this much more stripped down Invisible System sound before his later techniques of layering vocals and instruments on top in Ethiopia when his equipment and income had improved. It reflects his time living in Brighton and Brixton following a visit to India (including Goa) after graduating whilst shouting the intense heat and poverty of where he was based for 4 years living in the Sahara Desert at 48-52oC with a limited diet and studio. The monophonic synths are a nod to the many Malian monophonic griot instruments. No chords are involved. Dan was very derelict with no other musicians around. This album was fuelled by strong Malian tea and you can hear the solar panel and car battery!
