about

Recently found on an old minidisc in the attic and resurrected from an old Sony minidisc player/recorder that somehow survived years of travel in the Sahara Desert in Mali (still full of sand in the screen).

Harper Diabaté present a 2-track E.P. entitled simply Demos 1997 by Invisible System.

Just before moving to Mali to work and live Dan Harper had finished Keele University in Stoke-on-Trent with a degree in Environmental and Human Resource Management and moved with a bunch of his friends who had finished Fine Art degrees at Stoke Polytechnic/Staffordshire University and debunked on mass to Brighton.

Whilst scratching for work and trying to survive on peanuts Dan graduated from playing the guitar in a psychedelic funk/reggae band Karmic Debt using student loans to purchase second hand equipment. A Roland D50 and Korg MS20 synth. An Akai S2000 sampler with 2 audio outputs and 16MB memory. A pile of floppy discs. A cheap Studiomaster 12 channel mixing desk. And adding his Yamaha EMP100 multi-guitar FX box he learned to use Cubase on an Atari ST wired up to his Monitor Audio hifi speakers and created these two tracks. Recorded onto minidisc long before he had homed his mixing skills these tracks were the birth of Invisible System.

World music hints are heard in the mix and shortly after Dan sold his equipment moving to Mali to work via a British charity and moved to a laptop system long before they were powerful enough or capable of operating as a working studio.

That 3GB laptop released the previous Acid Mali 1999 E.P. release before advancements in technology allowed Dan to build his Worm Hole Recording Studio in his home in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia producing the first Invisible System album Punt (made in Ethiopia).

Enjoy this historic recording for what it is. The start and growth of a new work in progress.
